Calcium carbonate reaction with acid
One of the most important chemical properties of calcium carbonate is its reaction with acids. When calcium carbonate interacts with acids such as hydrochloric or nitric acid, it undergoes a reaction that results in the formation of a salt (calcium nitrate), carbon dioxide gas, and water. The release of carbon dioxide causes bubbling or fizzing which clearly indicates that a chemical reaction is occurring. For example, when calcium carbonate reacts with nitric acid, this produces calcium nitrate, carbon dioxide, and water.
Calcium Carbonate with Heat
Another important property of calcium carbonate is its thermal decomposition. When heated to a high temperature of about 825°C calcium carbonate breaks down into calcium oxide (quicklime) and carbon dioxide gas. This reaction is widely used in the manufacture of cement and lime making it one of the most important industrial reactions involving calcium carbonate.
